Moving to South Carolina checklist

The practical steps for an out-of-state move, roughly in the order they actually come up.

Before you move

  • Decide whether a home here will be your primary residence — it changes your property tax rate from 6% to 4% (see the property tax guide), but only once you file for it after moving in.
  • Check flood risk for any specific address you’re considering before making an offer, not after.
  • Get quotes for homeowners and (if applicable) flood insurance before closing — insurance cost varies a lot by exact location here.
  • Start the paperwork for South Carolina vehicle registration and driver’s license early — most states require this within 30–90 days of establishing residency.

Around the move itself

  • File a mail forwarding request with USPS.
  • Set up utilities (electric, water, internet) to start the day you take possession, not after.
  • Register to vote in South Carolina if you plan to.
  • Update your address with your bank, employer, and any subscriptions before the old address stops working.

After you’re in

  • File your Legal Residence Application with the county Assessor’s Office if this is your primary home — it’s not automatic, and missing it means paying the higher tax rate longer than necessary.
  • If you’re 65+, disabled, or legally blind, apply for the Homestead Exemption through the county Auditor’s Office — real savings, not applied automatically.
  • Find local services — see the local resources page for real, nearby options rather than starting from scratch.

This is a general checklist, not personalized legal or financial advice — specific requirements and deadlines can vary; verify anything time-sensitive with the relevant county office directly.
