From surveys to week one
Step 01
8 weeks before
Three in-home or virtual surveys. Compare written estimates the same way — Full Value Protection, packing scope, and whether unpacking is included.
Step 02
6 weeks before
Book with Full Value Protection. Skip released-value coverage that pays only cents per pound. Confirm binding or not-to-exceed terms on the estimate.
Step 03
4 weeks before
Start destination utilities by the exact parcel meter, and schedule origin shutoff for the delivery window. Do not invent a provider from a community name alone.
Step 04
3 weeks before
Change address at usps.com/move when the new address can receive mail. Pack the do-not-load closet: meds, IDs, Medicare cards, jewelry, a week of clothes, chargers, papers.
Step 05
Pickup day
Walk the inventory with the crew. Keep the bill of lading. Your personal bag stays with you — never on the truck.
Step 06
Delivery day
Pay the binding estimate as your contract requires before unload. Unpacking is separate unless you booked it.
Step 07
Week 1
License and registration on your market’s published timeline (SCDMV for South Carolina; NJ MVC appointment for New Jersey). Change Social Security address yourself at ssa.gov or 1-800-772-1213 — that also updates Medicare’s official address. File IRS Form 8822. If you have Advantage or Part D, tell the plan.
