Incorporated by act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 31, 1875, from portions of Dover Township (now Toms River Township). Named for John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton, one of the founders of the Province of New Jersey.
Later borough carve-outs from Berkeley include Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, Beachwood, Ocean Gate, Pine Beach, South Toms River, and Island Beach (reabsorbed 1965) — which is why Island Beach State Park still reads as part of the township’s character.
For Holiday City and Silver Ridge, daily life is inland and easy to drive: ranch streets where you own the home and the land, clubhouse calendars, and the Route 37 and Hooper shopping and medical stretch shared with Toms River. Downtown Main Street in Toms River is a short drive. The Boardwalk is an optional day, not the personality of the address.
